Getting to know Me

I am Helen Walker, an archivist, writer, artist, and dedicated mum. My early experience as a veterinary nurse deepened my passion for animals, especially dogs. Throughout that time, I also nurtured my creative pursuits—writing poetry and stories, and exploring my love of drawing.

I transitioned from the veterinary field to pursue a degree in English Studies at Sheffield Hallam University. My passion for history then led me into a career as an archivist, where I focused on audience engagement, education, and outreach.

Teaching both adults and young people is something I’m deeply passionate about, and it inspired me to earn a PGCE in Lifelong Learning. I love making history and literature accessible and engaging for diverse audiences, often using creative approaches to learning.

Alongside my work, I continue to write and create artwork. The loss of my beloved dog, Bear, deeply affected me and inspired me to write and illustrate a series of books dedicated to him. Through these stories, I want to share the special bond I had with Bear, capturing his personality and the joy he brought into my life.

My work reflects my love for animals, storytelling, and the healing power of creativity.

I find inspiration in the small wonders of life: nature’s quiet beauty, the curiosity of children, and the stories that unfold in everyday places.

My children’s series featuring Bear—a giant, lovable St. Bernard/Newfoundland mix—reflects my deep love of nature. For me, even the tiniest patch of grass or the tallest tree is bursting with life and energy. As a child, I was captivated by the endless possibilities of Enid Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree and the transformative wonder of The Secret Garden. I love how kids see the world—without filters or judgment—and that same spirit is reflected in Bear’s clumsy, heartwarming escapades and the way he views the world with wide-eyed joy.

My writing, whether for children or adults, often explores big themes: love in all its forms, from first breath to last goodbye; the unstoppable passage of time; and how we carry the colors of those we’ve lost. I believe that loss leaves an emptiness that can never be filled, but we carry their colors in our souls. My stories aim to hold both joy and sadness, often with a touch of humor to make the journey a little easier.

My own life has its quirks—I'm allergic to sheep, goats, wasp stings, and even Vicks VapoRub; I have a deep fear of balloons, ferrets, and heights (my worst nightmare is a hot-air balloon ride full of ferrets!). I admit I cry when animals die in nature documentaries, but I’d still love to have David Attenborough round for tea—just don’t mention anything sad!

My work reminds us that magic exists in every leaf, overheard conversation, and act of love. Whether it’s Bear’s messy adventures or a cringeworthy blind date, I enjoy turning life’s messiest moments into stories that make us smile, reflect, and see the wonder all around us.

Join me on my heartfelt writing journey as I craft stories inspired by my love for animals, history, and personal experiences. Through my books, poetry, and artwork, I aim to share my passions, connect with readers, and explore the healing power of storytelling. Whether you're a fellow writer or a curious reader, I welcome you to be part of my creative adventure.
